MATURE STUDENTS

After leaving school or college, young adults often find that they need to secure new diplomas or pass various courses or exams to develop their professional skills.

Over the years I have helped a range of adults retrieve, relearn or even learn for the first time key skills required in their profession.

  • Teacher Trainees (usually maths skills for non-mathematicians, but also making sense of education courses)
  • Nurses (usually maths skills but also helping to construct essays and dissertations)
  • Engineers (eg NVQ courses)
  • Armed services applicants (maths, reasoning skills)
  • Officer applicants for the Armed Services (reviewing and teaching to assess UK Defence issues, ethics of war, NATO, contemporary and recent political and military history)

UNIVERSITY LEVEL

As a university tutor and lecturer I gained extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, marking papers, setting exams and producing the curriculum for my courses. I was head of a small department for an American University campus in the UK for two years and also worked as a Tutor for the universities of Edinburgh, Stilring, and York University, Canada.

Along with writing several books and articles, I have edited and reviewed numerous books and articles for professional academics and also helped students formulate their material and research better at the undergraduate and Masters level. I have been area editor for the Internet Encyclopedia in Political Philosophy since 1998.

  • Politics

Tuition on the Isle of Wight

ABOUT THE SERVICE

What is your tutoring experience?

Extensive - over 20,000 one to one hours! I ran a succesful and reputable tuition company on the mainland for sixteen years helping around 35 regular one-to-one students a week in a wide variety of subjects with differing needs and ambitions - from getting into farming college, the university of their choice including medical and veterinary schools and Oxbridge, as well as helping mature students return to learning after a long break - e.g., Armed Service applicants and PGCE students and teacher training applicants.

I also worked regularly for several years with an English language school helping foreign students in summer school and for pre-university skills or tutoring Economics.

How long have you been on the Isle?

My wife (iowpiano.co.uk) used to live and teach on the island and we've been fortunate to relocate permantly here with our family in the beautiful Luccombe region in 2020.

Do you  tutor online?

While for the most part I continue to tutor online, I do see local pupils at our home when practicable. And I do love to meet up with local families interested in private tuition face to face so we can get to know each other and to explore requirements or just to help out with advice on their child's education.

I always offer a free one hour introduction session; and if you're on the island, that can usually be done informally face to face.

Are you DBS checked?

I'm Enhanced DBS checked and also have a Level Two Coaching licence for Judo covering DBS and Child Safeguarding requirements as well as First Aid. I also work freelance for local schools during the days which also comes with DBS coverage.

What is your professional background relevant to tuition?

Prior to tutoring, I gained professional experience at all levels of education from senior school to being a university tutor and lecturer and head of department. I also hold a PGCE in Maths. As a private tutor starting in 2002, my wife and I grew our tuition centre to become a reputable family based company in the East Midlands tutoring up to 7 days a week. Students were known to travel more than 20 miles to our centre - and we had up to a dozen colleugue tutors working for us, all in the PhD departments at local universities.

I have also mentored and taught many tutors over the years - many of whom went on to create sustainable and long term businesses.

Among several publications (books and articles), I have also written two books on the educational philosophiies of John Locke and Aristotle and have been interviewed on local and national radio and given talks at professional conferences.

But put all that aside I'm pretty much a down to earth person, very approachable, and I love getting the best out of young people - I'm humorous and encouraging, senstive to students'  needs and ambitions, and I enjoy seeing people develop and gain confidence in what they need and helping them get onto the path of fourishing rather than languishing!

My passion is getting the best out of my pupils with bespoke, tailor-made methods.

RATES

Regular weekly sessions start at £38 per hour (fees to be paid up front for agreed periods, usually half terms or monthly)

Irregular consultancy sessions start at £40 per hour (to be paid prior to tutorial).

While working with  more than one student is possible, I have always found that the students and myself don't get the best out of a sessions - one to one learning cannot be beat!
