ABOUT THE SERVICE
What is your tutoring experience?
Extensive - over 20,000 one to one hours! I ran a succesful and reputable tuition company on the mainland for sixteen years helping around 35 regular one-to-one students a week in a wide variety of subjects with differing needs and ambitions - from getting into farming college, the university of their choice including medical and veterinary schools and Oxbridge, as well as helping mature students return to learning after a long break - e.g., Armed Service applicants and PGCE students and teacher training applicants.
I also worked regularly for several years with an English language school helping foreign students in summer school and for pre-university skills or tutoring Economics.
How long have you been on the Isle?
My wife (iowpiano.co.uk) used to live and teach on the island and we've been fortunate to relocate permantly here with our family in the beautiful Luccombe region in 2020.
Do you tutor online?
While for the most part I continue to tutor online, I do see local pupils at our home when practicable. And I do love to meet up with local families interested in private tuition face to face so we can get to know each other and to explore requirements or just to help out with advice on their child's education.
I always offer a free one hour introduction session; and if you're on the island, that can usually be done informally face to face.
Are you DBS checked?
I'm Enhanced DBS checked and also have a Level Two Coaching licence for Judo covering DBS and Child Safeguarding requirements as well as First Aid. I also work freelance for local schools during the days which also comes with DBS coverage.
What is your professional background relevant to tuition?
Prior to tutoring, I gained professional experience at all levels of education from senior school to being a university tutor and lecturer and head of department. I also hold a PGCE in Maths. As a private tutor starting in 2002, my wife and I grew our tuition centre to become a reputable family based company in the East Midlands tutoring up to 7 days a week. Students were known to travel more than 20 miles to our centre - and we had up to a dozen colleugue tutors working for us, all in the PhD departments at local universities.
I have also mentored and taught many tutors over the years - many of whom went on to create sustainable and long term businesses.
Among several publications (books and articles), I have also written two books on the educational philosophiies of John Locke and Aristotle and have been interviewed on local and national radio and given talks at professional conferences.
But put all that aside I'm pretty much a down to earth person, very approachable, and I love getting the best out of young people - I'm humorous and encouraging, senstive to students' needs and ambitions, and I enjoy seeing people develop and gain confidence in what they need and helping them get onto the path of fourishing rather than languishing!
My passion is getting the best out of my pupils with bespoke, tailor-made methods.
RATES
Regular weekly sessions start at £38 per hour (fees to be paid up front for agreed periods, usually half terms or monthly)
Irregular consultancy sessions start at £40 per hour (to be paid prior to tutorial).
While working with more than one student is possible, I have always found that the students and myself don't get the best out of a sessions - one to one learning cannot be beat!

SOME KIND WORDS FROM STUDENTS AND PARENTS
TB re daughter GCSE Maths and English
"Alex was kind, patient and very motivational when tutoring my daughter leading up to her GCSE's in Maths and English. She is naturally very shy but Alex quickly and effortlessly developed a working relationship with her. Whenever she doubted herself he was able to turn it into a positive learning experience. Worth every penny, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Alex as a tutor. His extensive experience and gentle approach lends itself well to the wide range of subjects his is able to deliver." - TB
Harry, GCSE Student Yrs 10-11
“Suddenly maths made sense and became enjoyable! Without Alex I wouldn’t have passed maths and English"
ALD - three children Yrs 9 through to A-level
"Alex is an inspiring and engaging tutor for my children. He has tutored my three children in various subjects, including Maths, English, all Sciences, Psychology, and Geography, for both GCSE and A-Levels. They have all enjoyed having class with him. Alex brings a wealth of knowledge and life experiences to his teaching. He is exceptionally patient and encouraging, making him an excellent choice for anyone seeking a dedicated tutor."
JK, for A-levels
"Alex was recommended to us for tutoring our daughter and we were not disappointed! He was very welcoming from the off with a free consultation and time spent chatting to ourselves and our daughter so we could all get to know each other which was amazing for her as she is a little introverted and struggles to communicate due to her autism. Alex put her very much at ease and so it was very easy for us to decide on using him for the tutoring. He was able to adapt his teaching methods easily to meet her needs. Alex also took time to find out about our daughters interests and was able to use this information as part of his tutoring to help her understand and relate to points raised. Whilst we agreed a day and time with him initially, Alex is very flexible with days and times to suit family commitments which meant we were able to ensure we could get a lesson or 2 if necessary from him every week. Alex's enthusiasm and passion for teaching made learning very easy and fun ensuring his time and our money was absolutely used to the max! We employed Alex leading up to and during our Daughters GCSE's and his input played a massive part in ensuring confidence and knowledge were abundant when each exam was taken. Alex can teach a number of different subjects and so was able to adapt his teaching accordingly. We shall be employing him again for A level tutoring without question. We cannot recommend him high enough."
JS, A-Levels
"A great help to getting me to achieve the best of my abilities."
Emma, Yr9 to GCSEs
"Alex is a know it all in the best way possible, this is how he makes the lessons interesting by engaging you with multiple topics revolving what you are learning and making it a lot easier to follow. He has been helping me for 4 years now and has made school a lot easier for me."
Angus, Yrs 9 - 13
"Highly recommended!"
Louis’s mum
"I was recommended Alex by a friend, and I couldn't be more please with the results. Alex was incredibly reliable and flexible, making it easy to schedule lessons. My son made significant progress in maths through one-to-one tuition with Alex, who remained calm and explained concepts clearly, ensuring my son fully understood and improved his skills."
